Tax Increases Help in Anti-Smoking Movements

It is widely known that smoking of cigarettes is probably the most dangerous habit to ones health. Not only does smoking cause damage to oneself but it also effects others around them because of the chemicals and toxins that are found in second hand smoke.

Smoketip Electronic CigaretteThere are plenty of anti-smoking movements all across the country that have tried to get smoking in public places and places of business banned. While these movements have helped to achieve this effect on smoking, another movement has helped get smokers to quit. The price of the cigarettes.

Over the past few years taxes on cigarettes have risen over 300%. Originally the federal tax on a cigarette was around 60 cents for a pack. Today the taxes involved with a pack of cigarettes can be as much as $3 per pack depending upon the state where the cigarettes are brought.

This huge increase in the amount of a pack of cigarettes has caused smokers to try an quit. Financially speaking, there just isn’t enough money to cover the cost of smoking.

While taxes are one reason for the increase in cigarette prices the other factor is that of the cigarette companies. When the tax increase was passed the cigarette companies knew that there would be a massive decrease in people buying cigarettes. In order to cover this potential loss of revenue cigarette companies raised the price of cigarettes, which caused stores that sold them to raise the prices also. this was just another reason people decided to quit smoking.

While it might have been about raising more revenue through taxes. The increase of taxes on cigarettes and the price of a pack of cigarettes in general, has led a massive movement for people to quit smoking. The less smokers there are in the world the healthier our public health will be.

Addiction Redefined: MichaelsHouse.com

It is a familiar habit, an infallible part of your routine: you’re driving home after a tedious day of cubicle gossip and middle-manager demands. The hours were long and without reward, and you were certain they would never end. They finally did, however, and you were able to escape. Now you navigate the roads you know so well, able to control a car with one lazy hand. The other is devoted to the weight of a cigarette. The scent of smoke is thought to be a perfection. The taste is reveled in. And you are certain no moment could be better than the one you’ve just created.

Your dependence on that moment, however, is not to be celebrated.

SmokeStik - Alternative SmokingCigarettes are among the most common causes of addiction within the world. None could be unaware of this, but many choose still to ignore it. Obsession is to often offered to other substances (such as heroin, cocaine or opiates). This is instead considered to be merely a choice. The masses indulge in nicotine, without concern for the future consequences or their own lack of control.

And it is this that brands cigarettes as more than a pastime. They are instead a disease.

When an individual must rely on carbon flavors and shallow breaths to sustain himself, he is suffering from an addiction. The notion of stopping is forgotten (and will not be attempted without outside intervention). The idea of losing the sensation is abhorred. Cigarettes are vital, it’s argued. They must not be denied.

Such a philosophy has led to staggering statistics and useless deaths.

It is essential therefore that all who are dependent on cigarettes seek help. Organizations like MichaelsHouse.com are available and will provide programs and physicians. Support can be gained as the truth of an addiction is learned.

Understand that cigarettes are not merely conveniences. They are instead dangers and all too easy compulsions.

Young children will put anything and everything into their mouths. They don’t care what it is or what it tastes like they will put it in their mouths and likely swallow it. What starts out as a way for children to explore their surrounds can quickly turn into a dangorouse act.

Did you know that over 500 children every year are taken to the emergency room because they ingested a cigarette butt?

Smokers who were careless or not paying attention, discarded their cigarette butts around the child. When the parent or loved one was not looking the child picked it up and placed it in their mouth. It caused them to swallow it. In many of the cases the parent or loved one did not even know if the child swallowed the cigarette, it wasn’t until the child was sick that they knew something was up.

SmokeStik - Alternative SmokingIn a study conducted by the Rhode Island Department of Health, it showed that over 40 children ages 6 to 24 months, in one year were admitted to the hosptial as a result of ingesting cigarette butts or partial cigarettes. Toxins Found In Cigarettes

South Beach Smoke - The Better Smoking ChoiceEvery ad for antismoking says that there are over 4000 chemicals and toxin within a single tobacco cigarette. That is a lot of toxins to be inside a small item like a cigarette. While most places will quote the number of 4000 chemicals no one will really list what those chemicals are.

Here is a look at some of the chemicals that are inside that cigarette. If these toxins aren’t enough to help you consider quitting smoking, who knows what will help you stop.

Ammonia. This is found in most cleaning agents and is very powerful.

Arscinic. Remember rat poisoning, just one drop and the rat eats it and dies. That’s what is in that cigarette you are smoking.

Carbon Monoxide. Car fumes have high levels of carbon monoxide. It is often known to suffocate people and cause their deaths. You might as well directly inhale a car exhaust system, instead of smoking a cigarette.

Acetone. You know that powerful smelling, nail polish remover? That chemical is also inside that cigarette that you are smoking.

Formaldyhyde. A chemical that is used to preserve dead bodies or items used in dissecting is inside cigarettes.

Tar. Not directly inside that cigarette but the chemicals that are in cigarettes once inhaled turn into tar inside the body.

Most of these items are items that a person wouldn’t even dream of eating or drinking. Rat poison has on the side of the box, do not ingest. Other items are just as bad as that. The listed chemicals were just a small sample of the chemicals that are found inside cigarettes, there are still over 3900 chemicals that are too complex or complicated to list. All of the listed ingredients have directly effected the health of the smoker involved.

With all these items that a person wouldn’t even dream of ingesting, it’s a wonder why so many people are still smoking cigarettes at an alarming rate.

Riding in Vehicles That Have Second Hand Smoke

Ban on Smoking
Image via Wikipedia

SmokeStik - Alternative SmokingStudies have recently focused on the effects of second hand smoke on people. The results have been astounding. The person who is effected to secondhand smoke is just as likely to ingest nicotine and cancer causing items just as the smoker does.

With this finding by the study many people have started to be concerned over the effects of smoking in vehicles where children and others are present.

Smoking in a vehicle allows very little ventilation and forces a person to inhale all those powerful chemicals into their body. With no place for the smoke and chemicals to go the second hand person is forced to inhale the chemicals even though they are not themselves smoking the cigarettes.

The findings of this study have prompted many states to call for bans of smoking in vehicles where there are passengers. Some states have urged people to ban smoking where there is a passenger in the car at all. Others have insisted on the banning of smoking where there is a minor present. Minors vary depending on state and law but most cases it is either a person under 16 or under 18.

While many states have only called for the ban of smoking in vehicles. Many states such as California have already made it a law that you can be fined for smoking in a car with a minor. It is not a primary offense so the person cannot be pulled over if they are just smoking a cigarette, but if they are pulled over for speeding or other issues they can be ticketed for violating this ban.

To prevent smoking in cars, many car manufacturers have stopped making cigarette lighters that light up. Instead the only way that the lighter can be used if it’s for an electronic device such as a GPS or Cell phone.

Anti Smoking Fact Sheet: What is Second Hand Smoke?

It’s a major public health concern. It’s what innocent bystanders breath in when they are standing next to a smoker and it is very harmful to your health. It’s known as second hand smoke.

South Beach Smoke - The Better Smoking ChoiceSecond hand smoke, passive smoke or environmental tobacco smoke is all same thing. It’s just a different name for the same item. But what is second hand smoke really and what is is made up of?

Second hand smoke is the output of tobacco cigarettes that other people breath in. This smoke contains the nicotine and chemicals that smokers breath in only they are not physically smoking the cigarettes.

Studies have shown that the longer a person is exposed to second hand smoke the higher their risk is of developing all the cancers that are associated with smoking tobacco cigarettes.

The numbers are quite shocking when it comes to second hand smoke. Here are some of the amazing statistics about second hand smoke.

Over 45,000 deaths each year are a direct cause of second hand smoke exposure. These people pass away from cancer, heart trouble and other illnesses that are linked to cigarettes. Many of these people have never smoked a cigarette in their lives.

Over 300,000 cases of infections of the lungs such as pneumonia, bronchitis and other issues are a cause of second hand smoke. Many of these infections every year are in children ages 18 months and younger.

There are over 3,500 cases of non-smoking lung cancer cases in people who have never smoked a cigarette.

With all the risks that come from second hand smoke it is understandable why states are banning and stopping the ability to smoke indoors. Innocent people who are exposed to second hand smoke are being put at risks for illnesses and diseases that they do not expect to be exposed to at all. The only sure way to protect against second hand smoke is to ensure that there is no smoking at all around a person!

How Anti-Smoking Campaigns Can be More Successful

I took this photograph.
Image via Wikipedia

Everyone knows that smoking is harmful to your health. If not everyone knows this, they should. Information about the harmful effects of cigarettes is readily available in all types of media. From printed newspapers and magazines to television shows and movies, people are well aware of the facts. Since so much information is easily accessible, it is somewhat surprising that so many people still smoke cigarettes. Is the information not being understood or accepted as truth? Are the anti-smoking campaigns not targeting the right audiences? Is the addictive nature of cigarettes so overwhelming that the habit is just too hard to break?

SmokeStik - Alternative SmokingTaking a closer look at anti-smoking campaigns, it is a possibility that they are not reaching the right audiences. Smokers need to be exposed to the information in order to process and consider it. If the campaigns focus on one particular area, such as health clinics, there is a good chance many smokers are missing out. Not everyone uses the same clinic and many people that come to clinics are sick or otherwise preoccupied. They do not pay much attention to posters and pamphlets.

The information about the harmful effects of cigarettes is accepted as truth. The problem lies with people not thinking about their future. For instance, young people often ignore the long-term effects of something because they are too busy living in the present. So, while the smoking public understands and accepts the information about smoking, many just do not worry enough about their future health. They tend to only think about health problems after the problems occur.

Finally, while cigarettes are highly addictive, it is possible to quit. Millions of people have given up smoking, while millions of people continue to smoke. It is not an issue of the habit being too hard to break; it is an issue of people not wanting to break the habit. Prevention has to be the target of anti-smoking campaigns in order to see fewer numbers of smokers in the future.
